Bone Broth for Joint & Bone Health…

There are many reasons to incorporate bone broth into your daily life.  It helps with digestive issues, skin health, immune system, muscle recovery, etc.  One of the biggest reasons I tell my patients to drink bone broth daily is for joint health.  It is one of the best things you could add to your diet for cartilage, bone health, ligament and tendon health.  As we age, our joints and bones degenerate.  Adding a cup of bone broth a day helps with slowing this process down.

Long cooking time of bone broth breaks down cartilage and tendons releasing the very same compounds, chondroitin sulfates, and glucosamine, that are found in expensive supplements for arthritis and joint pain.  Drinking bone broth versus getting it from supplements is better as i the absorption rate increases due to your body recognizing the natural compounds better than chemical compounds made in a lab.  Bone broth also has a lot of vitamins, nutrients, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus.  All of these minerals help you to stay hydrated.  This is very important as your intervertebral discs contain up to 85% of water.  Age and lack of hydration make the spine degenerate faster.  Drinking bone broth will not only keep you hydrated but also give you the necessary minerals and vitamins to make the bone and cartilage stronger, leading to a healthier spine.

Another ailment bone broth is great for is anemia.  Bone broth is rich in nutrients such as iron, vitamin A & K, selenium, zinc, manganese.  All of these nutrients are great for building healthy blood, which in turn feeds bones and tissues for a healthy body!

Quick recipe:

3 lbs of bones (chicken for lighter version, beef for fattier version)

1 galon of water

1 oz of apple cider vinegar

Put ingredients in a pot or a slow cooker and cook on low for 16-18 hours.  Season with salt and turmeric for extra flavor.  If using beef bones, skim the fat off the top once bone broth is cooled.

Enjoy!
